This white paper explores how 3GPP-standardized Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) eliminate the traditional power and cost penalties of satellite IoT. By analyzing the Nordic Semiconductor nRF9151 module on Skylo’s network, the study demonstrates that energy consumption for standard data reporting is now comparable to terrestrial devices in poor coverage areas. These findings validate NTN as a power-efficient, scalable extension of NB-IoT and LTE-M, enabling multi-year battery life and global connectivity through a single, standardized hardware architecture.
